3D printing objects are achieved by using additive processes

What is an additive process? It where an object is created by laying down successive layers of material until the object is created. The layers are each thinly sliced into horizontal cross-sections of the eventual object.

How does 3D printing work?

First and foremost, you start by making a virtual design of the object you want to produce. For an instance, imagine creating a virtual design for a CAD (Computer Aided Design) file. This CAD file is created using a 3D modeling application or with a 3D scanner (this is to copy an existing object). A 3D scanner can make a 3D digital copy of an object.

What’s the difference between 3D scanners and 3D models?
3D scanners use different technologies to generate a 3D model. There are: time-of-flight, structured / modulated light, volumetric scanning and many more. Recently, companies like Microsoft and Google enabled their hardware to perform 3D scanning, for example Microsoft’s Kinect. In the near future, digitizing real objects into 3D models will become as easy as taking a picture. Future versions of smartphones will probably have integrated 3D scanners.

3D modeling software comes in many forms. There’s industrial grade software that costs thousands a year per license, but also free open source software, like Blender, for instance. When you are a beginner and the amount of choices are a bit overwhelming, we recommend to start with Tinkercad. Tinkercad has a free version and it works in browsers that support WebGL, for instance Google Chrome. They offer beginner lessons and has a built in option to get your object printed via various 3D printing services.

Curious to know the ways entrepreneurs are using 3-D printing technology to accomplish their goals?

Medical solutions for healthcare startups

How can 3D printing help the medical field?

With 3-D printing, models can be made showing organs and tissues as they might appear in the body, which, as you can imagine, has countless benefits for planning treatment.

There are several number of healthcare startups using scans and machines learning how to improve the medical field by creating detailed maps of the human body. Innovators are also taking it a step further by enabling 3D printing to model the information they discover to help doctors improve everything from diagnostics to surgery.

Improving the quality of education

With 3D models, it is much easier to present data in the real-world situation, for an instance students will learn better with 3D models as they will grasp and comprehend various learning concepts better. Just like how doctors can benefit from 3D models of their patients.
